Don’t Take Your Eyes off the Ball

As this new U.S. presidency has shown from day one, there will be all kinds of conflicts, discussion points, and issues to sift through. With POTUS DJT, the most important factor to remember – more than policies, tweets, economics, and fighting between groups – is that he has is a Narcissistic Personal Disorder (NPD). If you have dealt with NPD’s, you will know. You can also read through the descriptions on the MayoClinic website and see for yourself. NPD's can do some good, and they are beloved by many. But they are self-promoting and genuinely believe they are the best thing that could happen to others fortunate enough to know them. I urge you to keep your eye on that ball throughout this presidency.
NPD’s are also manipulative, deceptive, and ruthless without remorse towards people they perceive to be opposed to them. DJT’s similarity to Bane (villain in “The Dark Knight Rises”) is just as much due to his ruthlessness towards enemies as it is to a striking resemblance between Bane's speech and DJT's inauguration speech. (For clips of Bane’s ruthlessness, click here.) Related is how NPD’s lure others into fighting each other, by tossing out half-truths, accusations, criticisms, responsibility-deflections, or claims that divert attention from their own manipulative ambitions.
Reality also includes the fact that DJT was elected by enough of the U.S. citizenry for him to win through the Electoral College system. NPD’s have remarkable insight into leveraging arguments and systems to their own advantage – and the DJT campaign won the election. Now we as U.S. citizens, along with the rest of the world, will live with that. Many people are happy about DJT’s promise to “Make America Great Again,” including some U.S. Christian leaders who see God’s protecting hand of blessing at work. Some analysts are saddened by “The [Exceptional] America We Lost When Trump Won,” e.g., through the election’s "sheer, profound vulgarity." For myself, more than ever I see the United States of America as a contemporary economic, military, and cultural power that resulted from just one more colonial rebellion. That independence movement was part of a reshaping (in some parts unhealthy) over the past half-millennium of the Trans-Atlantic world – including the peoples and overall environments of West Africa, Western Europe, and pre-European “America.” We Caucasian U.S.-Americans who wish to continue to reap the benefits and inherited privileges of that transformation may unwittingly have helped bring into power a man who simply adores himself beyond all else.
While this 45th U.S. Presidency holds forth encouraging promise to many in financial and business senses, it also portends to wreak havoc through a self-serving NPD whose decisions and policies will only be made more harmful by DJT’s lack of international political experience and sensitivity. Running the U.S. Government like a for-profit business empire may help some people’s livelihoods and most corporations’ bottom lines improve, at least in the short-term. However, I fear for women and for those in the U.S. who fall outside DJT’s and his electorate’s racial-nationalist circles. I also fear for those many parts of the world that do not see eye-to-eye with a leader who would rather ruthlessly compete with them, in a game-like business that has military consequences, rather than cooperate toward the greater good. Kyrei eleison.

  1. I find it interesting that I learned once that people with an NPD often didn't get the attention that they needed as a child. Therefore they create a world around them that basically demands they get the attention that they missed. It's super sad. But it does help me as I look at this person who is both a sinner and has been sinned against. This doesn't mean that I am downplaying the seriousness of the problem. The community that has helped DJT rise to power is just as concerning as his own place in the power scheme. It's hard to attribute a NPD to all of them. Yes, Kyrei eleison. You state that the US resulted from a colonial rebellion. Yes. Do you feel that the suspicion of power that was built into the American "way" (post-rebellion) will help in this hour (aka check and balances)?

    1. We'll see. In this case, not sure how checks and balances will work in this day and age of electronic communication and electronic financial maneuverings; cf. the 2008 financial crisis. And in addition to a suspicion of power instinct, isn't there also an operative adoration of superheroes?

  2. I didn't know you were able to make a clinical diagnosis from reading stuff on the internet! This is fascinating! Have you also diagnosed his son Barron? I would stick to diagnosing bad theology, Lord knows there is enough around. Remember "when God wants to judge a nation, He gives it wicked rulers." (JCalvin, but you knew that!) I am confident God works through all personalities, for His glory.

    1. Yes, God is in control, thankfully. I also stand by what I posted in a constructive spirit of discussing with others how to navigate new socio-political waters, including: “If you have dealt with NPD’s, you will know.” And, “I fear for women and for those in the U.S. who fall outside DJT’s and his electorate’s racial-nationalist circles. I also fear for those many parts of the world that do not see eye-to-eye with a leader who would rather ruthlessly compete with them, in a game-like business that has military consequences, rather than cooperate toward the greater good.” What might happen, for instance, if the U.S. Embassy moves to Jerusalem primarily as a result of a DJT campaign strategy? "Kyrei eleison."

    2. Most of the world is used to dictators and/or authoritarian leaders of another stripe....they may actually understand DJT than you think. Why do you think the globalists are in such disarray? They see the future, and they don't own it anymore.
Reckon MTW ever had a few NPD's at its leadership?? haha because it's better to laugh than cry.

  3. As Christians, we should embrace holistic conversations around pressing issues of our time. I don't find it help nor encouraging to tell someone to "stick to diagnosing bad theology."
I too find his narcissism frightening and disturbing, especially as a woman, and hope that more people come to see it.

  4. This analysis helps me to understand DJT a little better. I am praying for him (I do like about 3 of his policy positions but no than that)... But short of divine intervention I don't expect him to change in the foreseeable future. While there are several rational, compassionate and non-NPD people around him who perhaps /could/ be a moderating influence, I wonder if he tolerates any strong objections from his advisors and inner circle.

The likelihood is that he will overstep Constitutional bounds in a serious enough way that his own party will feel forced to impeach him. He's skirting the edge now with the Emoluments clause, but the GOP controlled Congress probably doesn't see that as clear enough to act on. But he sees perceived slights everywhere, and he's impulsive enough and ruthless enough to lash out in ways that will undo him.... And, who knows, quite possibly undo everything else. One way or another, I don't see him remaining in power more than 18 months.

    1. Keith Olbermann pleads for resignation now: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1qdRyMgaR2g That of course is not going to happen, but I think Olbermann makes some excellent points, although he is missing (1) a confidence in God's sovereign control; and, (2) DJT's NPD - which means he is not "crazy," but intentionally self-promoting, alternate reality-creating, and deceptively manipulative.

    3. No, not a news source, but simply one commentator's heartfelt plea that has some insight, I believe.
